Your questions answered plainly

Here are some questions that get asked a lot

(and a few you probably haven’t thought of yet.)

Will the ceremony feel like us?

That is the entire point. Every ceremony begins with listening and is written from scratch.

What happens if you’re ill on the day?

I have a network of trusted celebrants who can step in if the absolute worst happens. It’s never happened — but it’s planned for. Your ceremony will be delivered.

How far in advance should I book?

As soon as you know your date, particularly for summer Saturdays, which go quickly. That said, I’ve had couples get in touch with six weeks to go and made it work. If your date is close, it’s always worth asking.

Do you travel?

Yes. Travel within 50 miles of Bourne, Lincolnshire is included; beyond that there’s a mileage supplement at 45p/mile. I’ll be clear about costs upfront, so there are no surprises. And if you’re even further afield, I’ve done destination ceremonies too: same guidance applies with travel and accommodation chargeable.

What’s the difference between a celebrant and a registrar?

A registrar delivers a legal ceremony with a fixed structure and required wording. A celebrant starts with you: no fixed script, no required wording, no constraints on what your ceremony can look, sound or feel like. The trade-off (in England and Wales) is the registry office appointment. Most couples think that’s a very fair trade.

Is a celebrant-led ceremony legally binding?

In England and Wales: no, not on its own. To be legally married, you’ll need a separate registry office appointment — a short, administrative ceremony that most couples do quietly the day before. It takes about 15 minutes, and your guests don’t need to know about it. In Scotland, celebrants can be legally licensed to marry couples, so one ceremony can do both. In Northern Ireland the rules differ again. I’ll guide you through exactly what applies to your situation. Don’t let the legal bit put you off — it’s simpler than it sounds, and it means your ceremony can be exactly what you want it to be.

Can my own friend or family member deliver the ceremony?

Yes that’s The Ghostwriter service. I design and write the whole ceremony and coach your chosen person to deliver it with confidence, so they’re fully prepped rather than quietly terrified.

Can we have pets or children involved?

Pets: yes and I love it. Children: yes — I'm experienced in writing ceremonies that hold them gently without the whole thing unravelling. Both: very brave, entirely possible and sure to be a highlight!

Do you help with speeches?

Yes that’s the Total Speech Package service, for the people standing up. I support with creating the speech content and/or delivery coaching, sharing some of my tips + tricks from my theatre days and keynote coaching.

How long does a ceremony usually last?

Most ceremonies run between 20 and 40 minutes. Long enough to say everything that matters; short enough to keep the room with you (kids and pets included).
